As many of you know, Global Running Day was on Wednesday, June 7th 2017. Runners around the world celebrated in various fashion. Many running clubs or running stores held group runs or special events to celebrate. Runner's pledged to run and logged their miles on GlobalRunningDay.org. According to the Global Running Day website, more than 1,200,000 people from 187 countries made the pledge to run this year, and more than 450,000 youth took part in the second annual Million Kid Run. Total miles pledged to run was 8,219,655.
"Together we pledged to run the distance from the earth to the moon and back 19 times!"
New York Road Runners
One particular event was held by the NYRR club (New York Road Runners) in New York City. The NYRR hosted the Global Running Day Treadmill Challenge. New York Road Runners attempted to set a world record for the “Most People in a Treadmill Relay”. The relay continued for more than 36 hours (36:13:37 to be exact) at the NYRR RUNCENTER, with 250 runners. Unfortunately they were unable to set the world record due to some strict transfer guidelines. You can read more about this here.
Moon Joggers hosted a virtual event called the "Global Group Run Around the World". Their goal was to recruit 24,901 people from around the world to go out and run at least one mile since the earth is 24,901 miles around. “This means as a group, we will run the distance around the world in one day!” their Facebook website stated. More info here.
The staff at Runner’s World participated in a one mile lunch run (RUNch). They even provided runners with signs to post at work so people would know where they were at lunch…running! In addition they held a free local 5k.
Oiselle, a global running community of women, started a relay. “A global relay of women around the world” to be exact. Their goal was to get participation in every time zone. Women posted group run pictures and tagged #oiselleworldrelay as women passed the baton. “Women running around the world in the name of ferocity, freedom, and fun”. I personally ran in my favorite #flystyle outfit. See pictures below.
Some major races like the Rock n Roll series offered discounts on race entry fees and running apparel companies offered discounts on clothes or shoes. Mark your calendar next year for Global Running Day to hopefully save on some of your favorite race entries! Brooks, the running shoe and apparel company offered to "endorse" athletes. More information here.
"Sign your official endorsement deal with Brooks. This isn’t your typical endorsement deal, this is all about finally giving you, and lots of runners like you, the superstar treatment you deserve."
Abbott World Marathon Majors
Some of us ambassadors for the Abbott World Marathon Majors included the flag of our country in a photo during (or before/after) our run. I personally wore an American flag hat and also ran to some American flags and took a picture in front of them. Here are some pictures of those who participated in the Flag Foto Challenge!
Other social media followers joined in on the fun as well. I loved seeing everyone pose with their flag! Another challenge I posted was running 24,901 steps which is around 11 miles. One step for each mile around our globe. See the posts below from a few people who participated in the Flag Foto and 24,901 steps challenges: @sophielaps_ @annabulilit and @ALeighMP
For Global Running Day I decided to run twice! I ran once in the morning and then again after work. My morning run was along my favorite route on road, where I incorporated several flags into my photos. For my evening run, I decided to hit the trails. Trails are my happy place, and I loved that I could finish my day on them. Plus doing a two-a-day run actually felt good! I could definitely incorporate them into my training.
However you celebrated Global Running Day, I hope you had fun. Mark your calendars for next year. Global Running Day is on June 6, 2018. I encourage you to find something creative to do, like our Flag Foto or a treadmill challenge. Celebrate our sport with other runners around the world!
Did you celebrate Global Running Day? If so, what did you do?
